20:00–21:00 Networking, discussions as well as 🍕+🍺
A framework for autonomous Postgres
Marc Linster, DBtune Fellow
Self-driving, or autonomous, databases are an urgent topic as
PostgreSQL becomes increasingly popular. Organizations adopting
PostgreSQL are facing major challenges:
More and more development teams do not include trained Development
DBAs, which means they have limited ability to design high-performance
schemas, queries, and indexes, or to address performance issues
resulting from the use of ORMs or vibe-coding tools.
Postgres adoption has outpaced the supply of qualified Operational
DBAs to support PostgreSQL-based systems after go-live. This means
that the lack of talent is hampering innovation.
Maintaining and operating databases at scale – 1000s of instances – is
challenging and costly. Quarterly security updates alone have become a
near-impossible task, without talking about continuous performance
management, backup monitoring, etc.
This talk reviews current work on automatic performance tuning and
autonomous databases in the PostgreSQL ecosystem (including Kubernetes and AI) and situates it within the five-level framework proposed by SAE International for autonomous vehicles.
We aim to evaluate existing solutions in the PostgreSQL ecosystem,
highlighting those with the most potential.
About the Speaker
Marc Linster has been working in Postgres for 13+ years, currently
serving as a Fellow at DBtune and an instructor at the Digital Learning Hub in Luxembourg. With a career spanning the US, Asia, and Europe, Marc has spent decades at the intersection of open-source
innovation and enterprise digital transformation. As the former CTO and Chief Product Officer of EDB (EnterpriseDB),
Marc was a primary architect of the Postgres enterprise trajectory. He
has guided Fortune 500 companies and global governments through
high-stakes migrations from proprietary legacy systems to open-source
excellence. In 2026, together with Vibhor Kumar, he published “AI-Ready PostgreSQL 18, Building Intelligent Data Systems with Transactions, Analytics,
and Vectors”. Marc holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and is a member of the
Luxembourg Business Angel Network. Today, he remains a sought-after
voice for his ability to bridge the gap between complex technical
infrastructure and measurable business growth.
