17:30 Customizable select elements
by Eric Veliyulin @ Forte
Styling the native select element has long been frustrating: browsers and operating systems control much of its appearance, which makes consistent design difficult and often pushes developers toward building fully custom dropdowns with JavaScript. New experimental browser features let you keep the native element while gaining control over how it looks and behaves, including the ability to style the trigger, the dropdown, and even the options themselves using standard HTML and CSS.
In this 30-minute session, we’ll start by outlining the limitations of traditional selects, then walk through the new capabilities with a few focused demos, showing how to build more flexible select elements without giving up the benefits of native form controls.
18:00 Let's break some WCAG rules
by Elise Kristiansen @ Variant
This talk is not a checklist of rules. It’s an interactive wake-up call.
15–25% of the population needs websites to accommodate different types of disabilities. Still, 94.8% of websites contain accessibility issues that make them harder to use.
It’s not because we don’t want to develop accessible websites and applications.
But we often lack knowledge and perspective. We build based on our own experience because that’s what we know. In this talk, you’ll get to experience how our applications work for someone with a screen reader, low vision, or limited motor control, and feel firsthand the challenges they face.
The talk combines knowledge, practice, and lived experience to raise your awareness of accessibility on the web and how small changes can make a huge difference.
You'll see the most common mistakes in action, who they affect, and how to fix them. So come experience the world through someone else's senses, and learn how to be a more accessible developer.
