About this event

Hello DevMadders!!

We present our May talk event! Join us as we keep the momentum going, and continue to showcase the incredible diversity of Madrid’s tech scene.

Our next stop takes us into the cross section of Civic Tech and Data Activism. We are honored to be hosted by Kaleidos, who embody the spirit of community-driven tech as the creative force behind Open Source products such as Penpot (for design and prototyping) and Taiga (project management for cross-domain agile teams).

This time around we are also honoured to feature Juan Luis Cano Rodríguez, who will share a powerful story of how code can be used as a tool for social change.
This talk explores the intersection of Python and public advocacy, proving that data isn’t just for dashboards—it’s for making an impact on the streets we live in. Buckle up for what is a rollercoaster data detective story!

As always, we’ve saved plenty of time for your questions and networking. Capacity is very limited in this unique space, so book your spot!

🎙️ Talk description

Mapping 10,000 illegal touristic apartments with Python

Speaker: Juan Luis Cano Rodríguez – Developer Relations Engineer @ Canonical

In Spring 2024 lots of protests were erupting around Spain against the "touristification" of our cities. My city, Madrid, has more or less the population of Berlin, but 4x times more Airbnbs, according to data scraped by activist groups.

This is the tale of how I used Python, open data, and some imaginative data mangling techniques to map over 10,000 illegal touristic apartments in Madrid, what happened after we reported *all* of them to the local government, and the hard lessons I learned along the way.
