About this event

Build your own bicycle dynamo and light — and power it without ever touching the wheel!

Description:

Generate your own battery-less electricity on your bike!

In this open source project, we're building a contactless bicycle dynamo: a small generator that powers your bike lights using nothing but the spin of your wheel. But wait.. there's more. It doesnt even make contact with your wheel! By using a physics phenomenon called eddy currents - swirling loops of electric current induced in a conductor moving through a magnetic field - you can generate enough power to light up a bike light, no batteries required!

We will learn about how this cool phenomenon works and then will be assembling our own dynamo and light.

Each participant will get a kit that includes

1x - Dynamo

1x - red/white bike light

William Kennedy makes lamps, light installations, and noise out of whatever he can find. Based in Los Angeles, Kennedy scavenges discarded objects and has repurposed them into over 100 original lighting fixtures and large-scale installations through his studio, Freakylamps. He has designed stage sets for internationally touring musicians, built interactive public art for festivals and municipalities, toured the world playing synthesizers in electro-pop bands, and cycled across the USA, Indonesia, Croatia, and beyond. He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech.
