Grafana is on a lot of screens, but far fewer people know where it came from or how to become part of it. We’ll explore its open-source roots, how it grew into the observability stack many of us use daily, and how you can get involved in the community.

💣 Grafana, Open Source & You: From Dashboards to Community
Grafana is more than the dashboards we use every day. In this talk, we’ll explore what open source means in practice, how the Grafana project started and evolved, and how its community helps shape the tools we rely on.
We’ll also introduce the Grafana Champion programme and discuss ways to get involved. Whether it’s opening your first issue, building your first plugin, or simply joining the next meetup, you’ll leave with a shared starting point and concrete ideas for contributing.
No prior Grafana experience is needed. If you already run Grafana in production, expect community context rather than a technical deep dive—and stay for the conversation afterwards!
Speaker: Rupesh Koushik Punna, Systems Engineer @ IMDEA Software Institute
Rupesh works on container security and observability at IMDEA Software Institute in Madrid. He builds tooling that traces application code down to the system calls it makes and uses those findings to generate least-privilege sandboxes.
He is currently building an open-source Grafana app plugin for vulnerability observability through Grafana’s mentorship programme and organises Grafana & Friends Cagliari.
