Paradigm Shift! by Sam Bellen
Access control is a part of all modern applications, protecting sensitive data and ensuring secure system interactions. This talk will explore various access control paradigms, including Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC), Policy-Based Access Control (PBAC), and Relationship-Based Access Control (ReBAC). Each approach has unique benefits and is suited to different scenarios, from cloud-native environments to dynamic, data-intensive applications.

We'll examine the core principles of these paradigms and discuss their advantages and limitations. You'll learn how RBAC simplifies management with predefined roles while ABAC offers detailed control based on attributes. We'll also explore PBAC's policy-driven flexibility and ReBAC's ability to handle complex relationships.

A key focus will be the emerging AuthZEN standard by the OpenID foundation, which provides a uniform API for interacting with various decision engines implementing different access control methods. This standard aims to simplify development, improve interoperability, and reduce the complexity of integrating multiple access control systems or migrating from one to another.

Why wait for one AI agent when you can have a few working at once?

I'll show you how I use Bloom and Amp to tackle coding tasks in parallel. Bloom is a native macOS app that runs agents locally, using Git worktrees to give each task its own workspace. You can chat, test your app, and review changes in one window.

Amp takes the work to the cloud with โ€œorbsโ€: separate machines where agents can write code, run your app, and test it. While Bloom needs your Mac awake and online, Ampโ€™s orbs keep going even when your laptop is asleep or disconnected. Close it, grab a coffee, check back later.

We'll cover what both tools can do, how to use them effectively, and how we use them at Spatie.

About Marceli
Marceli is a backend developer at Spatie who likes building things with Laravel, Inertia, and React.
