About this event

Software architecture is easy to draw, but much harder to keep alive.

As systems grow, teams change and delivery pressure builds, the original design can quickly become disconnected from reality. Diagrams become outdated. Decisions get buried in Slack threads. Critical knowledge ends up sitting with one or two people, and when they move on, the team is left trying to piece the picture back together.

But good architecture is not just a diagram. It is a shared understanding of how a system works, why decisions were made and how teams can continue evolving it with confidence.

This hands-on session will explore how teams can keep architectural knowledge visible, useful and trusted as systems become more complex.

Rather than focusing on theory or perfect diagrams, we will work through a real use case together: a system that has grown beyond any one person’s full understanding. Through practical exercises and discussion, we will look at the techniques that help teams make architecture a living part of delivery.

This session will be hosted by Simon Shaw, Delivery Director at Codurance, and Danish Javed, Senior Software Craftsperson at Codurance. Together, they’ll cover:

  • How to stop architectural knowledge becoming outdated, hidden or dependent on one person
  • How to use architecture decision records in a way people actually read and maintain
  • What lightweight documentation looks like when teams need to move quickly
  • How to create diagrams that support real conversations, rather than gathering dust in Confluence
  • How technical leads can help distribute architectural thinking across a team

This session is designed for software engineers, technical leads, architects and anyone interested in building systems that remain understandable, maintainable and adaptable over time.

Expect a practical, hands-on evening with real-world discussion on how teams can keep architecture connected to delivery, shared across the team and useful as systems continue to evolve.
