The 101st Query: Multitenancy at Scale
About this event
Hello Everyone! ๐
After a great start to the new season, we are back with our next SKG Java Meetup! ๐
This time, we are going to check the "behind the scenes" of one of the largest multitenant software platforms in the world!
Topic
How do you run one codebase and one database schema for hundreds of thousands of companies, while allowing each of them to add their own tables, columns and code, without taking a maintenance window?
This talk explores Salesforce as an engineering product rather than a CRM. We'll open up the published design of its multitenant, metadata-driven architecture: virtual schemas stored as metadata, "flex columns", pivot-table indexing, and a query optimizer that picks a different plan depending on who is asking.
We'll look at what's publicly known about the large Java runtime underneath, and at Apex, the Java-flavoured language that runs on top of it.
Then we get hands-on. With live code, we'll hit a governor limit, fix it, and move work off the request path. Along the way we'll see why the limits are really the multitenancy contract written as exceptions, and how that changes the way you design code.
๐ค Speakers
The session will be presented by Menelaos Radisis (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mradisis), Manager @Deloitte, and
Stella Vezdrevani (https://www.linkedin.com/in/stella-vezdrevani), Assistant Manager @Deloitte, and they will help us connect these ideas with concepts familiar to Java and backend engineers: resource isolation, database access patterns, asynchronous processing, scalability and designing applications for shared environments.
So no Salesforce experience is required. If you are interested in Java, backend engineering, databases, architecture or distributed systems, there will be plenty to take away from this session.
