Why owning your AI Matters – Running open-source LLMs locally for real-world development
This time, we’re slightly stepping away from our usual Go-focused topics and diving into one of the most relevant subjects in modern software development — practical AI tooling for developers.
We are happy to announce that meetup is organized as part of AI Week by Startit! 🚀
Modern AI tooling is becoming an essential part of everyday software development — but relying entirely on cloud providers raises important questions around privacy, cost, control, and long-term ownership.
The focus of the talk will not be on training models or on the “AI engineering” role, but rather on a practical approach from the perspective of a backend developer:
- how to run modern open-source models such as Qwen or Gemma locally
- how to use llama.cpp for efficient model inference
- how to connect a local model with a Claude Code CLI workflow
- how to get an AI assistant for development without relying on cloud providers or sending code to third parties
- what hardware is required and what can realistically be expected in terms of performance
The goal of the talk is to show that local AI tools are no longer reserved only for ML/AI engineers — backend developers can now relatively easily integrate them into their everyday workflow.
