About this event
Join AWS User Group West Midlands on Wednesday 2 December 2026 for an evening of AWS talks, community discussion and networking.
A massive thank you to Accenture Birmingham for hosting us. Opening up their office to the local AWS community is what makes nights like this happen and we really appreciate the support!
What we’ll cover
- A full incident breakdown: what happened when a whole region’s infrastructure went down, and what came next
- Platform engineering and infrastructure as code with AWS CDK
- Practical approaches to cloud modernisation and cost optimisation
- Open discussion and Q&A
Agenda
- 17:30 to 18:15: Registration and networking
- 18:15 to 18:45: “When the Meteor Hit” with Dominic Cooper-Wootton, Engineering Manager at With Wise. A candid, full breakdown of a major AWS infrastructure outage in Bahrain and how his Engineering team recovered.
- 18:45 to 19:15: “AWS CDK, Teaching the CDK new languages" with Omar Qurashi, Principal Engineer at Capital One. A look into what the CDK is - how the internals work for Amazon supported non-Typescript languages and my journey so far on adding support for the Ruby programming language as well as other languages.
- 19:15 to 19:45: Break and networking
- 19:45 to 20:15: Third speaker, to be announced
- 20:15 to 20:30: Community discussion and Q&A
- 20:30 onwards: Social at a local pub
Whether you’re learning AWS, building applications or running production infrastructure, come along, share what you’re working on and meet other AWS users across the West Midlands.
