ℹ️ Abstract

You’ve mastered the art of the NIF and squeezed every ounce of performance out of your code. But with great power comes great responsibility (and the occasional segfault that takes down your production node).

This talk explores how to run native code without risking the stability of your virtual machine.

We will start by looking at Ports, the simplest way to move dangerous code into a separate OS process. We’ll cover the protocols for talking to standard input/output and how to ensure your external program doesn’t turn into a zombie if the BEAM decides to restart.

Then we’ll move on to the heavy artillery: C Nodes. We’ll see how to use the ei library to make an external executable behave like an Erlang node. Did you know native code can connect to epmd, participate in the cluster and exchange messages just like a GenServer? We will demystify the setup required to make this happen and discuss the security implications.

Finally, we will break down the tradeoffs between them, comparing latency, complexity and fault tolerance, so you know exactly which tool to reach for when a NIF is just too risky.

Dai primi esperimenti degli anni '50 ai potenti sistemi odierni, questo intervento ripercorre le tappe principali della storia dell'Intelligenza Artificiale. Inizieremo con il Perceptron di Rosenblatt e i primi dibattiti nel settore, per poi attraversare gli alti e bassi dell'IA — inclusi i cosiddetti 'inverni dell'IA' — e il ritorno d'interesse grazie a una maggiore disponibilità di dati e metodi più efficaci. Arriveremo infine a pietre miliari come ImageNet, per capire come siamo giunti alla tecnologia di oggi.

AI-assisted testing usually stops at generating test code. But what happens when AI agents can execute tests themselves?

This session explores Black-Box Agentic Testing, where AI agents interact directly with a running application through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). DevFest Milano 2026 — Saturday, October 10, Randstad Box, Milan.

One day, two GDG communities, and 300 developers figuring out where technology is actually going. DevFest Milano is back: a full day of talks, hands-on workshops and community, organized by GDG Cloud Milano and GDG Milano.

The 2026 theme: from generative AI to agents
2026 is the year AI stops just answering and starts acting. This edition puts AI at the center — agentic AI in particular: systems that reason, plan, and use tools to get real work done. Four pillars run through the program:

Models & generative AI — LLMs, multimodality, and building products on top of today's models.

Agents & tool use — reasoning, planning, orchestration: agents that call tools and APIs to act.

AI in production — from prototype to scale: cloud, evaluation, cost, and reliability.

Responsible AI — safety, privacy, and impact: building AI you can trust.

And because DevFest is a developer festival, not a single-topic conference, the rest of the stack is here too: Android, Web, Cloud, Flutter, Kotlin, Firebase, DevOps, Open Source and Accessibility.

What happens on the day
Talks. Parallel tracks from morning to evening, delivered by Googlers, Google Developer Experts and engineers who ship this stuff for a living. Real architectures, real trade-offs, real numbers — including what didn't work.

Hands-on workshops. Bring a laptop. Build something with the tools you've been reading about, with people in the room who can unblock you.

Community. The hallway track is half the reason to come. Between sessions you'll find the people who maintain the libraries you use, run the meetups you attend, and are hiring for the job you might want next. Coffee breaks and lunch are included, so nobody has to disappear at midday.

Sessions are in Italian and English — each one is labelled in the agenda, so you always know what you're walking into.

Is DevFest for you?
If you write software — backend, mobile, frontend, data, infra — or lead people who do, yes. Senior engineers come for the depth, students come for the entry point into a community that will still be here next year, and everyone leaves with a few ideas they didn't have at 9am. No prerequisites beyond curiosity.

What makes DevFest different
DevFest is run by volunteers, for developers, at a community price. Nobody is on that stage because they bought a slot: the program comes out of an open Call for Speakers, reviewed by a committee of practitioners. That's why the talks are technical, honest, and occasionally opinionated.

In 2025 we brought together 300+ developers around 20+ sessions across 3 tracks.

Durante l'Hack Day:

AI can chain vulnerabilities into attack paths, turning individually low-risk weaknesses into critical cumulative threats, while analyzing open-source code and accelerating the development of exploits, malware and adaptive attacks. At the same time, AI does not face the same friction as a human attacker: it does not get tired, does not need to sleep and can operate at machine speed.
