Python Leiden User Group May 2026 meeting

Leiden, 🇳🇱 Netherlands

Come join our community of people interested in and working with the Python programming language. We meet up in the city of Leiden, The Netherlands. Exchange experiences and learn from others on the topic of the most popular programming language!

We meet up once every two months. The meetups are low profile, not commercial, and open to both professionals and enthusiasts.

At this meeting, we'll have these two talks:

Talk 1: Creative coding with Joy by Sudha Parimala

Joy is a creative coding library for Python that makes it easy to create graphics. In this talk, Sudha will introduce Joy and demonstrate how to use it to create interesting shapes and animations.

Talk 2: Baking Reliablity into Everyday Python by Farid Nouri Neshat

In this talk, Farid will share some stories about his experiences of trying to make something that is unreliable such as his last job’s data pipeline or the websites that kept dying by small scale DDoS to be more reliable and how to do that in particularly with Python. He will talk about practical defensive coding you can actually use at work tomorrow. He’ll go over how to protect your code from bad dependencies using strict timeouts and smart retries, and how queues and limiting concurrency to keeps your database from crashing under load. He’ll also touch on handling failures gracefully and importance of idempotency.

This will be a longer than usual talk, so where we typically have three on our meetups, this time we’ll keep it at these two!

If you would want to provide a talk youself on Python or a related topic, about a Python package you discovered or a project you've been working on, or something else; just send us a mail at talks@pythonleiden.nl

Meeting format
Our meetings will have presentations with room for discussion, and we will make sure there's also opportunity to meet and get to know your fellow group members.

About our meetups
Our talks happen in a friendly and informal setting. They are a great way to learn new things, share your knowledge, and meet other Python enthusiasts. There is always room for questions and discussion. Our presentations and talks are in English to be accessible for the large amount of non-Dutch speakers in the Python community.

Call for talks
We'd invite you to propose a talk for this or future meetings. Talks can be short or longer, they can include a live demo or a hands-on lab. It does not matter if you're not a highly experienced speaker. Meetup groups like this are great for building out your skills.

Meeting venue
Our meeting will take place at the “Technolab”, an organization that offers science education for children and teenagers. We’ll be using the big meeting room, while the people from “The Space Leiden”, a local hacker/makerspace, will also be present in the building. The Space will be open starting 19:00.
Our food sponsor Samotics is providing free pizza. If you don't care for pizza, you can also skip those and arrive at 20:00.
Our location can be tricky to find for first-timers, please check the instructions on our website here.
