From Challenge to Infrastructure: What It Really Takes to Design for Government (James Buchan)

Most government tech projects begin with a specification. ePass began with a problem: licensing in Scotland was slow, paper-heavy and different in every council and agency. CivTech asked for an outcome, not a solution. That one difference changed everything that followed.

In this talk, James Buchan, Founder and CEO of ePass, tells the story of going from a CivTech challenge to national government infrastructure. He’ll cover each stage, from concept to pilot to live services, and on to national adoption as a reusable common component.

User-centred design runs through the whole story. It isn’t a phase you finish. It’s what earns you the right to keep going. James will cover:

• Who the users are. In government you have more than one. You’re designing for citizens, businesses, licensing officers and policy teams all at once.
• Research in complex places. How to do discovery when every department works differently and the “as-is” process lives in people’s heads.
• Standards as a design tool. Why the Digital Scotland Service Standard and assessments push for better products, if you treat them that way.
• Designing for reuse. How to build a common component that 160+ licence types can configure, without it becoming hundreds of different products.
• What scale changes. How UCD practice has to adapt once you’re infrastructure and not a pilot.

You’ll leave with practical lessons on research, design and delivery that hold up in government, and an honest look at what goes wrong along the way.

Designing Doubt: Can I Make This Journey? (Tirtho Dasgupta)
In this talk, Tirtho will share his experience of building an accessibility co-pilot in just 9 weeks, solo. Through this journey, he'll explore how AI is changing the nature of design work, challenging designers to move beyond creating certainty and instead design for uncertainty itself.

Designing Doubt asks what “tech as good” really demands when the right answer is often “I’m not sure.”

James Buchan is Founder and CEO of ePass, the Scottish GovTech company automating how governments handle licensing and permitting. ePass started as a CivTech challenge, a spinout from AI and software delivery company Zudu. Welcome to the EdinburghJS November Meetup! We'll be meeting on Tuesday 17th November, 18:30 at the Perk office.

It is an uncertain time to be a programmer. The rise of agentic coding is changing the nature of dev work. Coding with agents can be exhilarating, but also addictive and exhausting. There is pressure to produce more, faster, with less regard for quality. With so much in flux, it can feel like our careers and the craft of coding as we know it are under threat.

Our talks this month will be about mental health and burnout in the age of AI coding.

The event will start with a talk by Miranda Heath about her research on how AI is affecting the mental health of software developers.

We will then have a guided chat about how our wellbeing and jobs are being affected by AI, and how we can support each other through these changes.

Expect pizza, good conversation and moral support!

AI Burnout and Brainfry

This summer, Syntax ran a survey on AI coding and mental health. I analysed the nearly 1000 comments developers left sharing their views and experiences.
Using insights from my training as a psychologist, I highlight some of the biggest and most surprising ways AI is impacting developers psychologically, including:

• how the pressure to produce more, faster, is leading developers to burn out
• how reviewing verbose AI generated code and running multiple agents in parallel puts developers under excessive cognitive loads, leading to ‘AI brainfry’
• how relying on AI to generate code affects developers' motivation, skill development, and feelings of self-worth and confidence
  developers' feelings about the changing nature of their craft and profession
• how AI creates a feeling of possibility than can make it hard to stop prompting and disconnect from work

I'll then consider what we can do to be healthy and happy coding in a world where AI is ubiquitous.

Miranda Heath is a founding director and researcher at the Software Stewardship Lab, and the author of the to-date most comprehensive report on burnout in Open Source.

Vlad Miricioiu works on protecting the Open Source infrastructure the world depends on. He is the founder and executive director of the Software Stewardship lab, a non-profit applied research lab working to ensure the stability of the Open Source ecosystems we depend on. He is also the director of the Open Source Pledge, which has raised $7,408,535 for Open Source maintainers.

Suleman Imdad Your AI Passed the Test. That's the Problem
A model can ace its evaluation and still fail the moment it meets reality. This talk digs into why, with findings from my own research:
• An 8B open model that changes its behaviour when it senses a safety test (a trick usually blamed on frontier models), and why its family predicts that better than its size
• The standard benchmark split that understates how badly drug-discovery models fail on genuinely new chemistry, on 21 of 22 endpoints
• What running a machine-learning system with real money teaches you about validation that no leaderboard will
• A practical checklist for catching a flattering evaluation before production does

Dr. Jon Minton Data as graphs: how to get AI agents to know what you know and they need to know
Say "data" to a statistician and they picture a table; say "graph" and they picture a chart. A computer scientist pictures nodes and edges. Working well with AI agents means holding both at once.
In two years we've moved from prompt engineering to context engineering, then loops, and now graphs. Jon Minton argues that the durable skill isn't the tooling. It's graph thinking: building a growing web of linked notes, decisions and preferences that an agent can traverse, so it keeps learning what you know and what you need to know. That web runs back from Codd's normal forms through tidy data to slipboxes and hypertext.
Drawing on the past few months of running a small consultancy with agents, Jon looks at the connections in both directions. Some carry knowledge from people to agents. Others carry it back from agents to people, as charts, reports and the occasional task the agent hands to its human. He also looks at where those connections turn into dark patterns: humans used as the machine's hands, or one model passing a refused task to another.

Suleman Imdad is the founder of Steel.vision, an Edinburgh-based company working on AI assurance (evaluating, testing and safety-checking enterprise AI systems) and edge AI for industrial field work. Over 15+ years he has built production software and AI systems for clients including Apple, Walmart, Nike, PwC and CVS, and he also builds and runs a live, real-money ML trading system. He is completing an MS in Artificial Intelligence at Johns Hopkins University, where his research covers transformer quantization and activation steering.

Dr. Jon Minton is a statistician, health economist, and public health researcher with approximately 20 years of experience across academia, public health, and the medical technology sector. He began his career in research at the University of York, contributing to systematic reviews and health technology assessments for NICE, before moving to the University of Sheffield to focus on health economic modelling. He subsequently spent five years at the University of Glasgow researching mortality trends and health inequalities, followed by six years at Public Health Scotland, where he supported the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 response and led population health analysis initiatives. From 2024 to 2026, he worked as a Senior Statistician at Smith+Nephew, specialising in clinical trial analysis, statistical methodology, and automation. Most recently, he founded Knowledge Tree and Butterfly Ltd, an Edinburgh-based consultancy focused on integrating agentic AI and reproducible analytical methods into research and software development.

  Surviving 2026 - A Security practitioners Field Guide to LLMs and Agents*: This year I've tested nearly 50 models and used several of them to build real projects, from production software to PoC exploits. Over the course of the year agents have gone from novelty to everyday tooling, bringing new capabilities and a new attack surface with them.*
  This talk is a practical guide from someone who's been hands-on all year. We'll talk about which models and tools actually deliver, how to get useful work out of agents, and where they fail, from confidently wrong output to security refusals. I'll also take a look at how to evaluate the constant stream of new releases without drowning in hype, so you leave with an approach that will still hold up when next week's model drops.

  Break the bank: welcome to the other side of the login screen:
  A lot of apps look secure from the login screen. This session shows what happens once you get past it.
  Using Rozolo, our deliberately vulnerable banking app, we follow a single £1 payment through the API layer and watch it turn into exposed customer data and unauthorised transactions. The weaknesses on show are the ones a scanner or firewall tends to miss: broken authorisation, weak object-level access control, and data the API hands back without being asked for it.
  The API layer is now the softest part of most estates, and perimeter controls do little to defend it. We use the walkthrough to show where a modern API security strategy actually earns its place: visibility over what your APIs expose, authorisation enforced per object rather than per endpoint, and testing that hunts for logic and access flaws rather than known signatures.
