Rust May Talks: Aetherus + Bevy

Edinburgh, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom

Tonight weโ€™ll be hearing from:

  • Cristian Bourceanu on "Aetherus: Monte-Carlo radiative transfer with photon history tracking of interactions for materials and surfaces". From Cristian:

"Monte-Carlo simulations are ubiquous in producing simulated results for problems that are challenging to solve numerically or analytically, but they can be described in terms of statistics. Aetherus is the first known multispectral time-resolved Monte-Carlo simulation, making extensive use of the Rust ecosystem: serde, rayon, nalegbra with SIMD speed-up. The big challenge is to analyse the results, for which we have added a novel events tracking method, using an encoding inspired from RISC-V 32-bit instruction encoding. This enables to group signals together based on various criteria and understand the effects underlying the detected photons histogram. A Domain Specific Language (DSL) was developed with chumsky to faciliate filtering based on an intuitive script."
"I am a PhD student at University of Edinburgh, investigating Multispectral LIDAR. Previously worked as a RISC-V CPU design engineer at Codasip and a firmware engineer at Hypervolt. Now trying to bring some of this knowledge together."

  • Fallible Things on "Bevy in Anger (and other stages of grief)".

Fallible has been working on a digital card game for 2 years, having migrated her client-side code base to Bevy after prototyping with Godot for 6 months. Bevy is the Game Engine darling of the Rust community, and has been subject to both much love and hate over its half-decade of development. What's it like trusting and using this technology over time? What will it look like in the future? Has sticking with it been worth it?

Fallible is an Artist and Technical Writer involved in the local independent game development scene, and an infrequent Bevy docs contributor

This time we'll be trying out hosting provided by the Edinburgh Community Rooms project at Patersons Land (no slant against our previous company hosts, who are still much appreciated, it's just good to mix things up occasionally ๐Ÿ˜€).

Plan for the evening:

  • 18:30: doors open
  • 19:00 โ†’ 20:00: talks + q/a
  • 20:00: move for drinks ๐Ÿป to Holyrood 9A, where we have a table booked (this is nearby Patersons Land)

Tech Leaders Forum - Leading in the age of AI

Edinburgh, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom

AI is already inside your organisation. Is it working? Join senior tech leaders for an honest conversation about what's really happening.

Leading in the Age of AI: Honest Conversations for Tech Leaders

Most tech leaders aren't short of AI opinions. They're short of honest conversations about what's actually working in reality.

Join CreateFuture for an evening with senior leaders from across the Scottish technology sector who are actively implementing AI inside their organisations - not to talk about the future, but to share what's happening right now. What they're getting right, where they've stumbled, and what they'd do differently.

Your panel

  • Lindsay Ratcliffe โ€” Chief Innovation & Transformation Officer, CreateFuture
  • Paul Gillespie โ€” Director of Engineering, Skyscanner
  • Sarah Thomson โ€” Head of Tech UK, People's Postcode Lottery
  • Stuart Bell โ€” Head of AI & Innovation, M&G

We'll cover the things that don't always make it into the case studies:

  • How to spot real AI opportunities - and avoid the expensive distractions
  • What it actually takes to make AI stick organisationally, not just technically
  • Balancing experimentation with governance and accountability
  • Building trust with your teams and customers in a world where AI is making real decisions

This isn't a keynote. It's a conversation - with peers navigating the same pressures, making the same trade-offs, in real time.

The evening

6pm - Doors open - networking and light buffet

6:30pm - Welcome and introductions

6:45pm - Panel discussion

7:15pm - Q&A

7:30pm - Networking and refreshments

8:30pm - Close

Come for the insight. Stay for the people.

Please include any dietary or access requirements when registering. To submit questions for the panel in advance, email events@createfuture.com.

๐ŸŽค SPEAKERS ๐ŸŽค
Stuart Ross , Director of Engineering at Skyscanner
Talk: Cost Is an Engineering Problem
Stuart Ross, Director of Engineering at Skyscanner, leads the platform behind 160 million monthly users and 100 billion daily pricing requests, and will share how the company moved from tracking spend to engineering for itโ€”treating cost at that scale as an engineering challenge as much as a cultural oneโ€”using FinOps and Cost Governance to embed real ownership in teams without slowing innovation.

Mike McQuaid, Homebrew Project Leader, CTPO at Administrate
Talk: Software Engineering in 2026: a WTF Q&A
Mike is an engineering and product leader with 18 years of experience reducing developer friction and scaling open source software used by tens of millions. Currently CTPO at Administrate and Homebrew Project Leader, former GitHub Principal Engineer (employee #232) who led initiatives including Merge Queue and internal developer environment, cofounder and former CTPO of Workbrew. Published author (Git in Practice), writer and frequent speaker (50+ talks) on engineering leadership, open source, automation, remote work and Git. Remote-first since 2009, with hands-on adoption of AI coding assistants and review tooling to increase velocity.

Noon van der Silk, Invariant Club
Talk: How to monorepo with Nix
You've read all the articles. You've discussed it at length and from all angles. You've considered all the tradeoffs. You've created the repo and you're ready to hack. But how are you going to get all your dependencies specified and available? How do you define the interconnected relationships between the projects? Let's take a look at approaching this problem via Nix.

May Meetup - Coding the Coder - AI Agents

Edinburgh, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom

Welcome to the EdinburghJS May Meetup! We will be meeting on Tuesday 19th May, 18:30 for light refreshments and talks at the Perk offices, Nova House, 3-5 Ponton Street.

Our talk this month is the rescheduled from Dennis Stanoev on "Coding the Coder"

Modern coding agents feel like magic, but behind every agent is a simple execution loop. In this talk, weโ€™ll work through a small but functional implementation of a coding agent. You'll see exactly how a simple conversation loop, a tool registry, and a file-system harness turn a chat prompt into a โ€œdeveloper".

We are using Luma as our ticketing system for this event. Please RSVP on Luma - if you choose to RSVP on Meetup and share your email with us, then we will transfer your registration to the Luma system where you may get invites for future events.

Space is limited, so keep your RSVP status up to date if your plans change.

โ€‹We have a Discord server for people to share links, tips, jobs and JavaScript problems โ€” join via the link on Scottish Technology Club.

โ€‹Thank you to Perk for sponsoring this event, providing catering and the venue. Perk are recruiting

โ€‹Supporters tickets with an optional and flexible contribution amount are available on Luma so that you can contribute to the running costs of the group.

โ€‹If travel costs are a barrier to attending, please let us know โ€” we have a diversity and hardship fund.
