🗣️ Oana May: "From Writing Code to Making Business-Aligned Decisions: Demystifying Product Sense in Developer-Friendly Terms"
Great engineers in the AI world won't just build things, they will decide what should be built and orchestrate AI to make it happen.
Oana breaks down product sense, the skill behind how product leaders make decisions in ambiguity, and translates it into practical thinking tools for engineers. Drawing on her experience coaching 1000+ product and engineering leaders in the Bay Area, New York and beyond, she shares FAANG-level methods that engineers and product leaders have used to move past execution and start influencing direction.
You'll learn:

About the speaker: Oana May
Oana May is an ex-Meta leader, FAANG product coach, and 3x founder. She recently launched MOATCRAFT™, where she helps software developers learn to choose what problems are worth solving and make better business-aligned decisions. Using the CRAFT system she developed coaching 1000+ product and engineering leaders across the Bay Area, New York, and Seattle, she now teaches builders how to navigate ambiguity and sharpen their judgment, the key skill in a world where AI writes the code.
Her systematic approach resonates especially with software engineers who have never been trained to think systematically about a skill usually perceived as soft and intuitive. Oana proves that this intuition can be learned deliberately, and fast.
Her background includes Harvard Business School and a track record of seeing around corners as a founder and product leader, helping builders earn promotions, land dream roles, and think beyond execution into making smarter bets.

Welcome to Women in Tech York's November event! Who are we?

Women in Tech York is a community! We're made up of individuals studying, working in, or interested in technology. We run events where attendees can share their knowledge and interests, as well as encourage and empower one another whilst building their networks.

Our events are not exclusive to women; absolutely everyone is welcome. You don't need to be a coder or consider yourself technical to enjoy and benefit from our events. We welcome all students and career-changers who are interested in learning more about tech and careers in the industry.

Events run on the second Thursday of the month.

What if “test it, ship fast, learn fast” is actually making your product worse?

We’re joined by Oana May, former Meta product leader, 3x founder, and product coach, for a session on one of the most important - and under-discussed - skills in building products: knowing what not to build. Oana has coached 1,000+ product and engineering leaders and developed the CRAFT system to help builders navigate ambiguity and make better decisions about which problems are actually worth solving.

Her argument is that testing isn’t enough. You can run the right experiments, learn from the results, and still end up further from the right product if your judgment about what to test is wrong. Drawing on her own product mistakes as well as her coaching experience, Oana will unpack the psychological trap that can make testing backfire, and introduce a practical technique for thinking differently before you ever run the test, borrowed from an unexpected source: acting.

FAQS

Can you cater for allergies and dietary requirements?

We always do our best to cater for everyone. If you let us know about your requirements at least 4 days in advance we'll pass them on to the venue and ask them to accommodate. A vegan buffet is ordered by default.

If you have concerns about the food on the night then please speak to a member of staff. Nutritional information can be found on Revolution's website. We order a buffet which typically includes mini burgers, fries, salads, garlic bread and small snacks. If you need to know what food will be provided ahead of time please let us know.

Is this event accessible?

• The room booked for this event is upstairs, but can be accessed by a lift. Please contact Revolution to confirm access to the lift.
• We usually use Google Slides with captions
• We ask our speakers to use the microphones provided.
• We have exclusive access to the upstairs toilets - please note there are 2 steps up to access these toilets specifically, though other toilets are available.
• You know your needs best - we've added an option on our order form for any adjustments or requirements you want to let the organisers know about in advance. We will do our best to ensure a fair and comfortable experience for everyone.

👉 Azure Architecture: Choosing wisely
The menu of Azure services is rich and vast. Selecting the best match for your application’s needs can be a daunting choice.
In this session we will create an architecture for a cloud-native application, with requirements that are taken from several real-world projects to provide a realistic scenario that should resonate with your own experiences.
We will look at the requirements and discuss which Azure services could be used to deliver them, discussing the options and explaining the final choice.
As our architecture diagram steadily expands we will discuss the impact of specific security requirements and how the architecture may need to change to satisfy them. We will also discuss monitoring and telemetry and how they affect our design.
Building an application in the cloud is a team sport. This session should provide learning for all involved: Developers writing applications who are involved in technology choices, IT Pros and Ops teams that manage and operate Azure within their organisation, Architects that design cloud applications and need to go through this process themselves, and finally managers who want to understand more about what their teams need to do in order to build cloud-native applications.

Cloud was supposed to save us, but those dastardly networks followed us there! So many projects in the cloud now demand that we keep our traffic within the corporate network. But what does that mean for our applications, and how much do we need to understand as developers? Can’t we just leave it to the networking team?

Let’s run through the fundamentals: stuff like DNS and address spaces, that are easy to mess up if you’re not paying attention. Let’s examine what’s meant by ‘hub and spoke’ or ‘split horizon DNS’. This isn’t a session for network professionals who already build and operate corporate systems at scale; this is a session for the developers who need to make sure their applications are going to work, who may not have spent years configuring switches and managing infrastructure, and who just need to know enough to get the job done and avoid the potholes on the journey.
