🧑‍💻 Speaker:

Lucas Hünniger - Backend Software Engineer @ Fronius

Lucas Hünniger is a Backend Engineer at Fronius with ~4 years of experience and a freshly earned Master's degree in Software Engineering from Hagenberg. Orleans is part of his daily work there and he is just as passionate about Cloud Native, OpenTelemetry and .NET in general. Together with friends, he co-founded Edusim Engineering.

When he is not coding, you will find him playing volleyball, and you are welcome to join him on the courts in Linz next summer! :)

🗣️ Next Stop: Virtual Actors | Microsoft Orleans on the Linz tram network

What if every tram stop in Linz was its own little actor? In this talk we build exactly that with Microsoft Orleans: stops, trips and service notices as virtual actors, fed by live data.

You will see how Orleans handles state, timers and reminders, hot spots, cluster failures and rolling updates, with plenty of examples and a live demo. You can pick your favourite stop on your phone, bet on the next delay and help me break the cluster on purpose.

I use Orleans every day at work, so besides the fun parts you also get the lessons learned the hard way. What to persist and what to let go, and what to think about before your first deployment. Whether you have never heard of the actor model or already run Orleans in production, you will leave with something to try on the next day.
