Software Engineering Events in Cambridge

Workshop at the offices of the wonderful Raspberry Pi Foundation's, on Hills Road in central Cambridge. Students will be paired up with coaches who'll work with them on whatever it is they want to learn about - be that getting to grips with basics, going through a programming language tutorial, looking at a personal project, or whatever.

Inside large enterprises, some of the most important product work enables those that build for external customers. This talk gives an insight into the role of enabling products; differentiating treatment of customers and stakeholders, triggering the use of a "mandate" and what happens when your competing products are built... by your colleagues.

Drawing on more than 10 years working within Lloyds Banking Group across marketing, technology and product, the session aims to give a different perspective on product leadership, how it can be applied in a complex environment and why it matters even more as AI changes how colleagues work.

About our presenter:
Tom Kelk is a product leader whose career spans marketing and technology, most recently as Senior Product Owner for Productivity Intelligence at Lloyds Banking Group.

In this role, Tom led teams building data and insight products for engineers and executives to improve engineering experience and productivity across the 30k+ community driving technology change.

He's now moving into a new enabling product role at AstraZeneca, continuing to explore what platform thinking looks like when the customer is the colleague next to you.

This is a monthly event to come and hang out with fellow 'Makespacers', swap ideas, and chat about new equipment, improvements, and the future of the Space. It’s relaxed, friendly, and a great way to stay connected to the community.

See the Space Tour: Hope you completed the mandatory 'See the Space' tour already at Makespace in person and received the ‘code’ to sign up for the induction. If you do not remember the code, please state when you did the tour and who offered it. We will try to confirm.

There are a few steps you can take to make the most of the induction.
1) Make your payment on the morning of your induction. Click here to set up the monthly payments:

2) Have 2 forms of ID ready to bring with you. One from each of these lists:

Government issued photo IDs : Current, valid full passport,photo-card driving licence, Armed Forces ID Card, Residence permit showing your full name and current address.

Address verification: Household utility bill,Bank, building society or credit card statement, Local authority tax bill, HM Revenue & Customs tax document. Screen shots are fine for the proof of address.

3) Start filling in your membership form by visiting here:
https://web.makespace.org/induction-form/ and clicking on the link to the induction form.
The form will ask for your name/address and to read the membership agreements. Please, complete that form until you reach a point where it tells you to stop and wait for the inductor.
You will require a Google account to complete the induction form at your induction.
4) Arrive before the induction start time at Makespace. At the door, you will be asked if you have completed the above steps.
You will reopen the induction form you started at home. When you log in with the same information all your data will be there.
The inductor will check your ID. Then there will be:

1. A short talk about how Makespace works (you can preview the presentation here)
2. An introduction to the equipment and training system. (have a look: https://equipment.makespace.org)
3. A safety tour of the workshops.

We will ask you to subscribe to the cammakespace Google Group (https://groups.google.com/g/cammakespace) for announcements and discussions.

Lastly you will be given your membership number so you can access training.

Our aim is to have all the administration finished within the 2 hours at which time you can join the other members in the workshops or start the online portion of your equipment training.

For our October meetup we are hosting a fun Coding Dojo where you'll practice your Test Driven Development software engineering skills - a key skill for Software Crafters that care about producing quality code, whether with AI - or not!

Join us for an evening of coding, food and drinks. Come and code along, share ideas, discuss best practices with Test Driven Development and learn from our expert Crafters and your peers in the Software Crafters Cambridge community.

What’s the format?
After a short intro, we’ll get into groups/pairs or work solo, whatever people feel most comfortable with, and start building.
You choose how you want to work and what language you want to code in.

This session is about collaborating with others, becoming a better developer and building your network, in a fun, relaxed environment.
We'll be sharing ideas, discussing best practices and using this as an opportunity to learn from our fellow coders.

What about AI tooling?
We encourage the use of AI tooling! We will briefly walk through how such tooling can act as multiplier, not to shortcut the discipline of TDD.

Don't have AI tooling?
No problem. TDD is a discipline that stands on its own, with or without AI. But if it's something you'd like to try, we can pair you with somebody who has the tools set up.

All levels of experience very welcome, if you want to brush up on your Test Driven Development skills or are a complete novice, do come along. All welcome! All you need to do is bring a laptop if you’d like to code along - please have your preferred language and editor setup.
