Software Engineering Events in Glasgow
This is the widest category on Brainberg, because software engineering itself spans a huge range of events: language user groups (Python, Rust, Go, TypeScript, Kotlin, Elixir, Ruby, Zig), framework communities (React, Svelte, Next.js, Vue, Laravel, Django, NixOS), backend architecture tracks, testing and QA tracks (ISTQB certification courses, mutation testing, test-automation workshops), refactoring and DDD circles, hackathons, and the long tail of "thoughtful engineering" meetups that don't fit neatly under any specific stack.
This page narrows the Glasgow calendar to Software Engineering events. It's a subset of United Kingdom's wider tech-event schedule, useful when you want something specific to go to in the city this month.

What AI ACTUALLY is
Ask ten people what "AI" means and you will get ten different answers, and most of them will assume it's an LLM. These misconceptions might look quite innocent, but in reality they are expensive. If we don't understand what AI is and the different types of AI that exist, we cannot pick the right solution to our business problems. Reaching for an LLM when a classic, auditable model would have done the job better is definitely not the best move when it comes to AI strategy...
This talk is about demystifying what AI actually is. We will go over a classification of the different types of AI, where LLMs and agentic AI fit in that picture, and the difference between deterministic and non-deterministic models. I'll also walk through real use cases where an LLM is not the most suitable solution, and a simpler, classic approach wins.
Lastly, Tech Meetup couldn’t be brought to you without our amazing sponsors, so a huge thank you to:

Overthewire.org war games workshop - Hacker games and tutorials
Glasgow, 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
We're planning to try some of the beginner/intermediate war games from OverTheWire.org
Bandit
The Bandit wargame is aimed at absolute beginners. It will teach the basics needed to be able to play other wargames.
Leviathan
This wargame doesn't require any knowledge about programming - just a bit of common sense and some knowledge about basic *nix commands. We had no idea that it'd be this hard to make an interesting wargame that wouldn't require programming abilities from the players. Hopefully we made an interesting challenge for the new ones.
Natas
Natas teaches the basics of serverside web-security.
Krypton
The Krypton wargame features encryption and ciphers.
The games start easily, but get complex quickly - so those that already know their way around will get a challenge too.
This is a great event to get to know everyone, you can work through the levels at your own pace, or just help out others that are stuck. We'll also talk you through the solutions to help beginners learn.
We're being hosted in The Gamer Club, so there is free tea and coffee, or you are welcome to bring in your own beers/wine and snacks.
You can get more details about how to find the venue at https://www.thegamerclub.co.uk/gettinghere
Note: You'll need a laptop to work through the levels
Linux command line basics for beginners (and hackers!)
Glasgow, 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
Our regular event is back; a guided exploration of the Linux server command line.
Aimed at absolute beginners. We'll show how to securely connect to a server then we'll work through Bandit, an adventure game set in the command line that progresses step-by-step from the basics to common programs and beyond.
This will be an in-person event in The Gamer Club, on Bath Lane.
I'll work through the challenges on the big screen and explain what I'm doing as well all work together though the levels. Join in and play along or feel free to work on your own thing (setting up a server, coding etc) and someone there should be able to assist you if needed.
Read more on our wiki page at:
https://opensource.glasgow.social/command_line
As always, remember to check out our open source chatroom on Matrix at #opensource:glasgow.social (sign up at https://glasgow.social/matrix if you don't have your own homeserver).
The event is free, but there will be a donation tin to cover the meetup costs if you'd like to help out.
Note: The venue is unlicenced, but you are welcome to bring your own beers/wine and there is free tea and coffees! See https://www.thegamerclub.co.uk/gettinghere for directions.
Note: You'll need a laptop to get the most out of this session.
