AWS UG Hamburg May: Agentic DevOps & Security Lessons Learned

Hamburg, đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș Germany

Dear AWS users,

our May event will happen soon!
Thanks to Freenow by Lyft for providing us the space, drinks and food for this AWS User Group Meetup.

Agenda & Talks:

  • 18:00 Warm-up
  • 18:30 - 19:00 Agentic AWS Ops: Automating Troubleshooting and Maintenance of AWS Resources by Clifford Sanders
  • 19:00 - 19:15 Break
  • 19:15 - 19:45 AWS Security at Scale: Lessons from an Anonymized Review of One of Germany’s Largest Financial Services Providers by Hendrik Hagen
  • 20:00 - 21:00 Wrap up & Networking

Agentic AWS Ops: Automating Troubleshooting and Maintenance of AWS Resources by Clifford Sanders
As cloud-native architectures scale, SRE teams are often buried under a deluge of operational data and maintenance toil. Traditional monitoring is reactive, but the emergence of "Agentic Ops" allows teams to move toward autonomous, self-investigating infrastructure. This talk explores the practical implementation of HolmesGPT, a CNCF Sandbox project, for alert-driven operations on AWS. We will dive into two production-ready use cases:

  • Reactive Troubleshooting: How AI agents autonomously investigate EKS alerts by correlating signals across Prometheus, Kubernetes events, and logs to identify root causes in seconds.
  • Proactive Maintenance: Leveraging agentic workflows to monitor RDS version deprecations and automate notifications to resource owners, ensuring seamless engine upgrades before maintenance windows hit.

AWS Security at Scale: Lessons from an Anonymized Review of One of Germany’s Largest Financial Services Providers by Hendrik Hagen
Cybersecurity, especially cloud security, is one of the most discussed topics today. Long gone are the days of on-premises environments where you could hide your infrastructure behind a strong perimeter. Modern infrastructure runs in the cloud: large, complex, and inherently interconnected ecosystems.
Even within a single AWS account, we have instant access to hundreds of services, thousands of API calls to consider, global reach from day one, and virtually unlimited scalability. Building and maintaining a strong security posture in such an environment is already a challenge. But what happens when, instead of securing one AWS account, you are responsible for more than 1,500 AWS accounts and, on top of that, operate in a tightly regulated environment like the financial sector?
In this short talk, I’ll walk you through the lessons I learned while conducting a security review for one of Germany’s largest financial services providers. I’ll highlight the pitfalls and issues that arise when operating AWS at this scale, and share my personal best practices, along with practical tips and tricks for scaling your own AWS security.

---
We'll meet at Freenow by Lyft
NeumĂŒhlen 19, 22763 Hamburg

---
As usual, we are always looking for new speakers and topics. In case you would like to share something within our AWS User Group, feel to reach out via email, meetup.com, or use our Google Form to submit your idea.

If you or your company wants to host our user group, please contact us via the event location Google Form.

Vaadin + jOOQ : Enterprise Anwendungen in 100% Java

Agentic Coding Studio

Hamburg, đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș Germany

Building with AI agents - not just using them? Shipping products where agents do the heavy lifting? This is your spot.

Once a month on Sunday, agent builders get together to hang out, exchange ideas, and build. If you're orchestrating multi-agent workflows, trusting your agents to ship code, or building products powered by autonomous AI - you're home.

The Drop (first ~45 min) We kick things off with one or two log drops - max 15-minute demos, discoveries, or hot takes where everyone gathers round. Discussion after each. No slides required. No polished talks. Just "here's something worth chewing on."
Got something you want to drop? Reach out to Malte and we'll get you a slot.

Open Studio (rest of the day) No agenda. Zero lecture time. Just good people, laptops, caffeine, and good vibes.

what can happen (totally optional)

  • Trade tips & tricks - share an agent pattern, orchestration hack, or workflow that clicked.
  • Demo a work-in-progress - get feedback on your agent stack or just flex your latest build.
  • Pair up, unblock each other, or tackle a mini challenge together.
  • Solo deep-work - pop in headphones and grind on your own repo.
  • Random chat - agent frameworks, startup ideas, life as a builder
 whatever sparks.
  • Drop a log of your own - less formal than The Drop, just grab a few people and share what you're working on.

Show up with whatever energy you've got; some weeks the room is full of networking vibe, other weeks it's a quiet co-working bubble. All good.

good to know

  • Cost? €0
  • Bring: laptop, charger, headphones (if you like).
  • Language: English.
  • Who's it for? Builders who work with agents, not just AI-assisted coding tools. You should be comfortable letting agents drive - whether that's Claude Code, Cursor, multi-agent pipelines, or your own agent stack. New to AI coding? Check out our Beginner Boot-up first.

Important: Can't make it? Please update your RSVP. Chronic no-shows lose their free spot next time. Thanks!

Thoughts on (Modern?) Software Development - Observations From a 21-Year Journey

Hamburg, đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș Germany

„If someone is taking a journey, he (or she) can tell a story. Therefore I would take my staff and hat and would choose to travel.“ (Matthias Claudius, 1740-1815)
The present talk was designed with exactly this, 1000-times heard (and slightly updated), German proverb in the back of the mind. It summarizes the gist of 20+ years in the software development business and outlines what the presenter identified as relevant for a productive and thriving survival out there in „the wild“. The talk covers:
1.) Characteristics of software development (aka „the complex environment“)
2.) What is experience and how do you gain it? (aka „the Dreyfus learning model“)
3.) Cognitive biases and factors of influence related to the software development process
4.) The gist of software development: „Precision, guess work, unreliable data and questionable knowledge“
5.) Observations on humans that code and Hype Driven Development (including the current hype of AI)
6.) (Almost) Eternal & current challenges of software development
7.) Technology & tools
So, have you ever been wondering why we, as a whole community of experts, so often struggle to tame the beast called software development? The "Thoughts on (Modern?) Software Development" talk presents some possible answers to the question why our ongoing fight is - and will very likely remain - a tough one.
Spoiler: Most of the time it is not about what your stakeholders, or you as someone who is directly involved, think it is
